David Parry
B12 The Clockmaker - PARRY, David, (1765-1847) Mr Parry was a clockmaker. One of two that we have located that resided in Raglan (the other watchmaker was Isaac Hall who died in 1797).

Born in Raglan, David made watches as well as grandfather clocks. He was mad about clocks! He is buried next to the Church, crowned by a gravestone with a clock carved in the top that is set for the time that he died. This was Ernie Morgan's favourite gravestone (see GRAVE A52) .

Sadly, this gravestone is a poignant example of the impact of air pollution on gravestones. In 1991, the stone was readable - try reading it today! Learn more about Clockmaking

INSCRIPTION

(B12) PARRY. In memory of David PARRY of this parish who departed this life in February 27, 1847. Died 82 years. (Note: the Clock at the top of the gravestone is believed to show the time that he died)

LIFE

David Parry was born, 15 April 1764, the son of Paul Parry. When he was 21 years of age, David married Elizabeth Parry, of Abergavenny.

The Hereford Journal announced their marriage, On Thursday, March 16, Mr. Parry, watchmaker married Miss Elizabeth Parry of Abergavenny Monmouthsire (Hereford Journal, 16 March 1786). Note that the marriage took place 27 February, 1786 but wasn't announced until over two weeks later!

In the early years of their marriage, David and Elizabeth Parry were servants of Margaret Pytt who lived in Church House across from St Cadoc's Church. He must have been supplementing his income until his clockmaking took off!

In any event, David and Elizabeth PARRY had at least 6 children (see below). He was still making clocks until he was 75 years old. By 1841 he had probably outlived his wife Elizabeth because he is listed in the 1841 Census record as living with William and Mary Lewis, and on the 1841 Raglan Tithe map he was living at Old House and Orchard (owned by Mary Holmes, no. 46).

ANCESTORS

David Parry is possibly the son of James and Mary Parry.

David might have had a brother John Parry, who married Mary Lewis, 6 July 1788.

David was 82 years of age when he died on 3 March, 1847.

He might also have had an uncle, Paul Parry, who married Ann Jenkins, 7 Feb 1758 in Raglan. Witnesses: William Penry and Elizabeth Bevan.

NOTES

Somehow Raglan has an interesting link with clockmakers! - William Harrison, the son of the famous John Harrison (the inventor of the pocket time-piece or watch, and of other mechanical contrivances) had a country residence at The Ton (the Glade). In 1791 he was sheriff of Monmouthshire. (source: Bradney,Hundred of Raglan, 1914)
