In 1863, Richard married Sophia MORGAN of Llandenny and together they had 8 children. He built Morton House on Castle Street where he lived with his wife Sophie and their children until his death in February 1912, aged 70 years. His wife, Sophia followed him, in 1918.

Sons, Edgar and Albert followed in the family footsteps, becoming carpenters and joiners; daughter Annie became a schoolmistress for more than 20 years. Edgar's grandaughter, Connie is the butcher at Watkins' grocery and plays the church organ at St Cadoc's each Sunday.
