A08 - John and Mary Jones
One of the early graves identified by the History Detectives is that of John and Mary Jones, chemist at the Old Shop (now Post Office), Raglan. The children were touched to read the inscription on their gravestone, "Also seven of their children who died in infancy". These days it is rare for children to die in infancy, but in the 1800s, it was common. The children are seldom mentioned in the burial records and were often buried near the north side of the graveyard (next to the Old Schoolhouse), without a stone.

History Detectives, 2011
The Raglan School History Detectives are thrilled to receive emails about people they are researching in the graveyard. One of John JONES' descendants wrote: "My husband's ancestors lived in Raglan throughout the 1800s. We happened to see that the picture of school children who were looking at the graves in the Raglan church were standing next to his great great grandfather's grave. His name was John Jones (chemist born 1815), married to a Mary Jones.

Among their 12 children was Edward Jones, born 1842. Edward was his grandfather's father on his mother's side. This Edward's grave is surmounted with a cross draped with a wreath and is close by John's (see A50)

LIFE

John JONES was born in Raglan in 1815. His parents were probably Walter and Elizabeth JONES. Although he had many occupations in his life (grocer, druggist, chemist, farmer, brick and tile manufacturer) John saw himself as a chemist. For 30 years John and his wife Mary lived and worked at 'The Old Shop' (now the Post Office) in Raglan High Street. His son, Edward, took over the family business in the 1860s, and John and Mary moved to Castle Vale where he became a brick and tile manufacturer (probably due to the amount of building that was being done in Raglan at the time). He died in 1887, and his wife Mary died two years later, in 1889.

ANCESTORS

John JONES may have been born, May 1815 to WALTER and ELIZABETH JONES. Walter JONES, a yeoman, was born in 1777 and died, aged 67, on 21 August 1844 (Raglan burial register, 1794-2010). Walter and his wife Elizabeth were farmers. Walter JONES occupied a barnyard, shed & garden on Usk Road as well as a house, garden & premises on Castle Street, the Old Inn, garden, Barn & Yard on Castle Street along with an orchard, covers of arable land and Mais y gwrn. The majority of these properties were owned by Alexander JONES, esq. with the Old Inn belonging to the Duke of Beaufort (1841 Raglan tithe map).

John's son, Edward, named one of his children Walter Edward, b. 1871 (sadly, he died in infancy).

John and Mary Jones had a total of 11 children. Seven of these died before the age of 10. They were William, Eliza, Thomas, Robert Henry, another William and Maria.
